Grassland
Melomys
Melomys burtoni

The Grassland Melomy is a very
beautiful and delightful little rodent. They are agile climbers and have a
partially prehensile tail. It is found in a wide variety of habitats from sedge lands,
open forest, woodlands and grassy patches within rainforests. It has a varied
diet of plant stems, seeds, fruits and insects. Seen here eating Sweet Potato.
Unfortunately they have a fondness
for eating sugar cane and consequently are seen as a pest species.
