Daintree Rainforest Wildlife
photographed at Thylogale
by David & Diane Armbrust
Competition between the male
pademelons for the breeding rights can at times be quite fierce, often resulting
in loss of fur and more serious injuries. Note the heads held back
protecting the eyes from the raking claws of the opponent. The purpose of
the clinch is
to get the other antagonist off balance and to deliver kicks to the abdomen.
This fight resulted in the defeat of the resident dominant male who was
actually the larger of the two but exhausted from continually defending
his breeding rights against younger males.
