Our experience in local tourism began in 1979 when a career change resulted in me becoming the Ferry Master on the Daintree River providing access into the Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation rainforest. This was at the very beginning of nature based tourism in the Daintree, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation regions.

A further six years were then spent on the Daintree River as a launch master and naturalist guide operating a cruise boat for Daintree Wildlife Safaris. The 10 meter catamaran the "Kingfisher" was an ideal vessel for showing visitors the birdlife, the crocodiles and for interpreting the rainforest and mangrove ecosystems of this magnificent tidal river.

David and LouieFor the next four years, working as a naturalist guide with Silky Oaks Lodge, I conducted four wheel drive land based safaris into the National Parks and State Forest of the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland.

In 1993 we perceived in the Port Douglas area the lack of a small discrete local day safari which could deliver a quality ecotourism experience to discerning visitors in both comfort and privacy. To ensure a personal day and to guarantee our clients views of rainforest wildlife we took the decision to limit the group size to a maximum of four people. We also decided to include a visit to our home rainforest property 'Thylogale' in the tour itinerary. This was the beginning of Australian Natural History Safari.

Diane and David Armbrust with red-legged pademelon (Phoebe) at ThylogaleOur twenty six years in nature based tourism and a lifetime in this area has provided us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in our local eco-systems and wildlife. In this time we have also gained a huge respect and appreciation for the delicate balance of Australia's fragile ecology.

Our ecotourism venture has been featured in several publications and is used by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service as an example to other landholders on the possible alternative uses of the natural resources of their land.

Both Diane and myself have a strong nature conservation ethic and are committed to providing our clients with a highly memorable experience.

Our initial commitment to quality has been ongoing and has led to the establishment of Australian Natural History Safari's reputation in the industry for providing excellence in product
and best practice ecotourism.
